Obituary Search

records research

Obituaries are the most popular record for genealogists. Found in newspapers, either on the front page or in a Death Notices column located in the Want Ads section, they list name, date of death, cause of death, list of survivors (which can provide names of surviving children), cemetery name, burial information, details on work life, clubs or organizations. Knowing these details, can lead to further places to check for information. Tips for searching in large city newspapers would be to look two days after the date of death. In small town newspapers, search one week after the date of death. Many older issues of newspapers are online for you to search. Most historical societies have back Issues of newspapers on microfilm.
